It’s an odd thing, seeing yourself on TV. I’m used to complaining about the TV guys as they push me around. Sometimes they’re a blessing at events because they need light to shoot which gives me light to shoot. But it’s a whole different thing to stand there in a newsroom with local celebrity news anchor Kathi Goertzen telling me “It’ll be over before you know it” as we wait for the guy standing next to the camera to waggle his finger while saying “And five…”

My biggest question was, “What do I do with my hands?” I wanted to stuff them in my pockets which…seemed a little unprofessional. But “there I was” doing it for the team–the FEAR Project team that is.

It seems that one thing led to another which brought me to co-anchor Molly Shen who has made dialog about sexual violence a personal mission. She was my introduction to KOMO TV and as a result it looks like they’ll be doing their own feature on sexual violence in the months to come. Perfect, since the project’s mission is to create dialog in communities.

This live interview ran on Tuesday, November 15. It ran again on the radio and thanks to Jen, my volunteer PR coach from Vandenberg Communications, it received this praise from another marketing person who (by chance) heard it on the radio:

“I think you did an excellent job of describing a scenario where a listener could visualize a scene (such of that at Harborview), imagine what takes place and how traumatic that must be for those involved which makes the listener care, and then bringing your message home about the project and how it can help….Great work! I just had to drop you a line and let you know I thought it was one of the best radio interviews I’ve heard in a very long time and I wouldn’t say that if it wasn’t true.”

This was very flattering and surprising at the same time. I hadn’t seen the .mov clips when I received the email and to be honest, Kathi Goertzen was right. It was over before I knew it and I didn’t remember much of what I said–only that I didn’t know what to do with my hands.
